According to 3 different decrees of the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Una Garlanda
is “RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONSERVATION” of 8 ancient conservation rice varieties:
- Bertone
- Originario Chinese
- Lencino
- Chinese Ostiglia
- Nano
- Dellarole
- Precoce Gallina
- Precoce 6

Every year our farm preserves, reproduces and produces, under the control
and CERTIFICATION of CREA
(Italian Council for Agricultural Research and Analysis of Agricultural Economics),
these ancient varieties.
Three of these ancient conservation varieties (Bertone, Originario Chinese, Dellarole),
are already marketed by us as brown, semi-brown and white rice.

OUR ORGANIC AGRICULTURE FROM SEED TO DISH
Since 2002, Una Garlanda farm has been producing organically, as currently defined
by the European Union regulations (Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 and Regulation (EU) 2018/848), obtaining organic EU certification for the entire farm surface area.
The current European legislation on organic farming,
with the italian system of derogations, provides for the possibility of using conventional
and not organic seeds as long as they are not “treated” with
synthetic chemical products, if organic ones are not available on the market.
A system that will remain in place until 2035. According to data published by the CREA Seed
Experimentation and Certification Centre, in Italy in 2016 almost 94% of the 63,810 derogations
requested were accepted.
According to these official data, the exemption from the use of organic seeds is the normality, especially in rice production.

Certified by what surrounds us
At the end 2019, the FAO raised an alarm and we can no longer ignore it.
“Biodiversity, the basis of our food systems and our survival, is disappearing,
not only that which is cultivated or raised, but also that
associated with it, of plants, animals and microorganisms that keep the soil fertile, pollinate plants,
purify water and air, contributing to the good health of ecosystems. And once so much food wealth is
lost, it cannot be recovered”.
For these reasons, since February 2019,
Una Garlanda is one of the founding members of the
Association of Agricultural Producers “Polyculturae”,
a non-profit organization that aims to promote
among farmers, but also in the population, the study, dissemination
and practical implementation of the Biodiversity recovery,
respect and protection.
The project underlying “Polyculturae” includes the establishment
of a “certification brand” called “Biodiversitas” and a system certification based
on independent and rigorous control, which aims to identify, enhance
and guarantee farms who acts for recovery and conservation of agrobiodiversity.

COLLABORATION WITH SHUMEI NATURAL AGRICULTURE
The Italian SHUMEI Association represents the international organization
“Shumei Natural Agricultural Network” in Italy.
Shumei Italia has expressed on several occasions sincere appreciation
for our activities for environment reconstruction and protection
and for the agricultural good practices that we
have been implementing for more than 20 years.
The collaboration with the Italian SHUMEI Association has materialized
with the creation of some experimental rice fields in which we reduce
to a minimum every human intervention.
In 2024, Shumei Natural Agricultural certified the high quality
of Una Garlanda production process and products.
It seems almost incredible but ….. These are our rice fields!
