The culture of doing and being together

A Garlanda organizes and carries out cultural activities every month.
We dedicated these activities to adults and children, for good
agricultural practices promotion and dissemination, for environment
education and respect, for landscape protection, for agricultural
and natural biodiversity conservation, for healthier and more
balanced diet principles study, for circular economy and waste
materials recovery, green building, craftsmanship and sustainable development.

Associations, Institutions, Universities, Schools:
Unity is strength!!

Since 2019 we have been and we are founding members of the “Polyculturae” Association

Together with other farms and with the contribution of University
researchers and teachers, we give value to a natural way of doing
agriculture that goes beyond organic. We start from the
environment and biodiversity respect, conservation and study in all
their aspects in order to aggregate people and to found the future
agro-food culture.

In 2023-24, as part of the project “Biodiversitas: participatory
biodiversity” by Polyculturae, in collaboration with the University of
Milan and the Municipality of Rovasenda, we hosted participatory
science activities, “Citizen Science”, involving several hundred
people in monitoring and studying biodiversity (wild herbs,
butterflies, dragonflies, etc.)

Here are just some of the topics covered:
- The Stocchi method (or green mulching)
- Agroforestry and planting trees and shrubs
- Management of historical rice varieties
- Rotations, intercropping and good practices
- The short supply chain of rice and other cereals

Una Garlanda is also a founding member of the "Biodistretto del riso
Piemontese". This is the first Association for organic production
and promotion of agricultural biodiversity in rice growing.

The “Biodistretto” project combines the new and historic varieties of
rice production through agronomic practices that exclude chemical
fertilizers and herbicides. The project aims also to protect the
cultivation territory of Baraggia, with its prehistoric rarities, such as
the Isoetes Malinverniana; an aquatic fern dating back to the
Devonian era (from 419 to 359 million years ago) which is now in
danger of extinction and it is still present in residual forms in the
Baraggivo territory of the “Biodistretto”.

The Maps of the historical Rural Landscape of regional interest
created by ISMEA (Institute of Services for the Agricultural and Food
Market), ARPA Piemonte (Piemont Regional Agency for
Environmental Protection) and the “Authority for the management of
the protected areas of Ticino and Lake Maggiore” highlight also Una
Garlanda landscape, cultural and environmental interest activities.
